Updated: Aug 22, 2023

Resin crafts have been taking the crafting world by storm, capturing the hearts of artists and enthusiasts alike. This versatile and captivating medium allows for the creation of stunning and unique pieces that add a touch of elegance and creativity to any space. Whether you are a seasoned crafter or a beginner looking to explore new artistic avenues, resin crafts offer endless possibilities. In this blog, we will dive into the world of resin crafting, exploring its uses, as well as the pros and cons that come along with this fascinating art form.

Creativity with Resin: Resin, a liquid polymer that hardens when mixed with a catalyst, has become increasingly popular in crafting due to its versatility and ability to preserve and encapsulate various materials. The uses of resin in crafting are truly limitless. Here are just a few ways in which resin can be used to create stunning works of art:

  1. Jewellery Making: Resin is a popular choice for creating unique and eye-catching jewellery pieces. It can be used to encase small objects such as dried flowers, beads, or even small photographs, resulting in one-of-a-kind wearable art.

  2. Home Décor: Resin crafts can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any living space. From creating vibrant and colourful coasters to designing mesmerizing table tops or wall art, resin allows for the incorporation of various pigments, glitters, and additives to achieve desired effects.

  3. Paperweights and Keepsakes: Resin is an ideal medium for creating personalized paperweights and keepsakes. By encapsulating sentimental objects like trinkets, mementos, or even baby shoes, you can transform cherished memories into tangible pieces of art.

As a newcomer to resin, I came across a coaster crafting kit in my local B&M store, that seemed suitable for a beginner like myself. The kit included resin, a coaster mould and some gold glitter/flakes. I immediately thought it might also be something different to use our crystal chips with as well, and was intrigued at the idea of perhaps adding some citrine chips to compliment the gold flakes.

Using the instructions found in the kit (and simply adding some citrine chips at the same time, I was pleasantly surprised at how my first attempt turned out. There's definitely a few air bubbles in there, but overall I'm happy with the results! I've included some images below:

Pros of Resin Crafting:

  1. Versatility: Resin crafts offer limitless creative possibilities. Whether you prefer working with moulds or enjoy experimenting with free-form designs, resin can adapt to your artistic vision.

  2. Preservation: Resin acts as a protective shield, preserving delicate objects and materials for years to come. It can encapsulate and safeguard sentimental items while allowing them to be beautifully displayed.

  3. Visual Appeal: The glossy and transparent finish of resin creates a stunning visual effect, enhancing the beauty of the embedded objects. The ability to incorporate pigments, dyes, and other additives allows for the creation of custom colours and captivating designs.

  4. Accessibility: Resin crafting can be enjoyed by both beginners and experienced artists. With a wide range of available resin types, including UV resin and epoxy resin, there are options suitable for various skill levels and preferences.

Cons of Resin Crafting:

  1. Safety Precautions: Working with resin requires careful attention to safety measures. Proper ventilation and the use of personal protective equipment, such as gloves and masks, are essential due to the potential toxicity of some resin types.

  2. Time and Patience: Resin crafting can be time-consuming, as the material requires sufficient curing time to achieve a durable and flawless finish. Patience is key when working with resin, as rushing the process can lead to undesirable results.

  3. Learning Curve: While resin crafts are accessible to beginners, there is a learning curve involved in mastering various techniques. Understanding the correct resin-to-catalyst ratio, avoiding air bubbles, and achieving desired effects may take some practice.

Resin crafts open up a world of creative possibilities, enabling artists and crafters to transform ordinary objects into extraordinary works of art. From jewellery making to home décor, resin offers a unique medium to showcase your creativity and style. While resin crafting requires attention to safety precautions and patience, the end results are often breath-taking and rewarding.
